Don't Forget...Monday is a Fee-Free Day

Monday, January 19 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – is the first entrance fee-free date for 2015.

If you’re lucky enough to have Monday off of work, you’ll be glad to know that all of the national parks, seashores, monuments, memorials and other protected will not charge an entrance fee. In fact, more than 100 U.S. parks that normally charge fees will be free to the public on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19, 2015.

I still think that the annual park pass is a no-brainer. It puts much needed funds in the hands of the NPS. For a trip that includes multiple national parks, the $80 annual pass provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands — more than 2,000 in all. It’s a great deal!

The next fee-free day in 2015 are February 14-16, Presidents Day weekend. Entrance fees and tour fees are generally waived, although camping and concession fees may not be.

The National Park Service reminds us that our national parks are places for everyone to have fun, reconnect with nature and history, and build a sense of ownership and stewardship toward the environment . Many of the 405 national parks, seashores, monuments, memorials and other protected lands never charge an entrance fee. But more than 100 U.S. parks that normally do charge fees will be free to the public on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19, 2015.

If you’re planning a trip that includes multiple national parks, you might consider the $80 annual pass that provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands — more than 2,000 in all. The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass is offered free to all active duty military members and their dependents.

Other fee-free days in 2015 are February 14-16, Presidents Day weekend; April 18-19, National Park Week; August 25, National Park Service birthday; September 26, National Public Lands Day; and November 11, Veterans Day. Special National Park Poster Project Upgrades

With just hours left on the Kickstarter campaign, I wanted to give you some last minute updates!

We managed to exceed all of our funding goals…and we’re just about to top 350 Backers 450% of our original goal! The best news is that by crashing the $20K funding mark, I’m able to offer backers so much more…

First off, every backer at the $10 and up level will now receive the Typography Poster absolutely free in addition to the posters they pledged.

So, you can actually pledge $10 and get they Typography Poster and a National Park poster — it’s the same as the $25 pledge — but since we reached our funding goals, I’m able to spread the love!

Second, everyone will get digital wallpaper backgrounds for phones, tablets, laptops and desktops featuring the images from The National Park Poster Project.

Third, everyone will receive a digital download of the Typography Poster…to do with what you will!

And, finally, we’re going to be able to up the print quality of the posters, using an environmentally-responsible, 100% recycled paper stock called “Conservation,” soy and veggie-based inks by working with D&K Printing in Boulder, Colorado.

There’s still time to get involved — but not much — the campaign ends tonight at 10PM Mountain Time.

Here’s the link one more time! goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks,

Rob.

P.S. Still working on the last poster — for Rocky Mountain National Park!

The National Park Poster Project Enters Final Campaign Days

Well, the Kickstarter campaign has been a raging success, to say the least!

We were awarded Kickstarter Staff Pick status in the first week…and we hit the 100% funding mark in just nine days.

Then, we were off to the races. We hit 200%, then 200 backers. Then, 300% and 300 backers. Now, we’re on the verge of hitting 400% of our original funding goal.

During the campaign, we’ve released posters for Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Grand Teton. I’m putting the finishing touches on Haleakala, and a second poster for Rocky Mountain this weekend (and I promise to have them done before the campaign ends on Sunday!).

And, the Grand Teton poster capped off the Rocky Mountain Collection…

So, just wanted to say “Thank You” again for all the incredible support, words of encouragement, and sharing this project with friends, family, followers and others who love the national parks!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Poster

It’s been said that the Black Canyon gets its name because it’s so steep, it only gets 33 minutes of sunlight every day. The canyon is actually alive with vibrant colors of rock, water and sky.

This is the 10th poster to be completed. Just two more to go!

Mesa Verde National Park Poster Released Today!

I’ve just finished the Mesa Verde National Park Poster, which turned out to be a real challenge…as the cliff dwellings required more detail than most scenes.

The new Mesa Verde poster is part of The National Park Poster Project — a Kickstarter campaign you can see here: http://goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks to awesome backer support, in just three weeks, our Kickstarter Staff Pick project has more than 150 backers and raised nearly 200% of our original funding goal!

Remember, once we reach 200% of our original funding goal, all backers will get a set of digital wallpapers for desktops, tablets and phones — featuring images from The National Park Poster Project.

So, with about a week to go, I’m hoping we can reach one more goal — to get 200 backers!

If you could become a backer of The National Park Poster Project on Kickstarter, you can get awesome posters, that are perfect for holiday giving! Click here to check it out: http://goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks! And, please share The National Park Poster Project with your friends, family, or anyone you think might be interested.

Also, I’ve created an Exclusive Backer Survey, where you can help decide which National Parks will be included in the next series of poster designs.

If you can back The National Park Poster Project — even at the $1 level — I’ll send you a link to the survey so you can help guide the future of The National Park Poster Project!

Rocky Mountain National Park Sneak Peek!

Last week was awesome, with great media coverage, Kickstarter Staff Pick status, and we reached our minimum funding goal in just nine days!

Check out the Kickstarter Page: goo.gl/DFKPG0

Today, I am releasing one of the two Rocky Mountain National Park posters…this one of Cub Lake. I’ve got a couple of other Rocky Mountain posters in the works…and I may put out a survey to see which ones people like best.

So, here’s Rocky Mountain #1…featuring Cub Lake…an easy hike out of Moraine Park, it offers meadows — often populated with wildflowers and wildlife — marsh, forests of pine and aspen and a serene lake surrounded by mountains. With a modest elevation gain, at least by Rocky Mountain National Park standards, this is a great hike for families whose skills have progressed beyond shorter hikes.

The National Park Poster Project Hits Funding Goal...In Just Nine Days!

The National Park Poster Project, currently running on Kickstarter, has reached it’s initial funding goal…in just nine days. The project, which was touted as one of Kickstarter’s fastest growing projects, and then awarded the Kickstarter Staff Pick no doubt added to the campaign’s success.

But now, there is much more to do! In order to reach the ultimate goal of creating a poster for each of the 59 National Parks, additional funds are needed for acquiring images, creating the artwork and printing the final posters.

Here’s a sneak peak at the Grand Teton National Park poster.

So, there’s more than two week’s left in the campaign, so please continue to share…and if you can back this project, that would be great, too!

Great Sand Dunes National Park WPA-Style Poster

The Tale of Two Sand Dunes

I first visited Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in 2010, but when I started this project in 2013, and looked through those shots, I hadn't really captured that single iconic shot I was looking for. One day, while on the Great Sand Dunes NPS site, there was an image in the gallery that was exactly what I had in mind!

To my surprise, there was a link to get more information about a high resolution version of the file.

When I called the visitor center, not only did I find someone to talk to about it, I was talking to Patrick Myers, the National Park Ranger who took the photo! I told him about my project, and he offered to put the large digital file onto a CD and mail it to me. So, although I really wanted to use my own photography in the posters, who better than someone who literally lives and breathes Great Sand Dunes every single day!

Armed with the digital content, as well as Patrick Myers consent, I started work on the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve poster. The photograph featured the sand dunes in the foreground and the Sangre de Christo mountain range in the back. The shot was taken late in the afternoon, so that the dunes cast long shadows.

After completing the photo-graphic process, I added the other graphic elements -- headlines, text, logos, etc. And the poster was ready to go.

In July of 2014, I visited Great Sand Dunes again, and although I had my cameras, I was there to show Patrick Myers, as well as bookstore staff, the poster I had created. Of course, Murphy's Law came into play, as my large format printer died the day before...and I wasn't able to get a good print to show them, and had to resort to an on-screen version on my laptop.

Well the good news was that they loved it! But they did have a couple of suggestions. The first was to add in the foreground, Medano Creek, which has a seasonal flow, mostly from the spring runoff. The second suggestion was to make the dunes themselves a little more orange color. That was actually the easy part.

Again, I went back to the well (no pun intended), and looked at my earlier Sand Dunes photos to see if I had any shots featuring the water in Medano Creek. And I hit the jackpot. I had a great shot of the water with the sand dunes in the background in a pretty similar perspective. Decades of work in Photoshop prepared me for the next step, where I had to integrate the water into the existing photo...which did not have any to begin with. I also needed to get the water to mimic the same time of day as the original photo...and ultimately ended up brightening the whole scene...allowing for a little more daylight to light up the dunes and reflect off the water.

I had a very short run of the new poster printed up at Colt Printing in Boulder, and when they were done, mailed off a couple of copies for the staff at Great Sand Dunes to enjoy. When they arrived, Patrick Myers sent me an email:

Rob,

We got them, and they look perfect!  You have nailed it.

Thanks again!

Patrick Myers
Park Ranger - Interpretation, Visitor Services, Publications and Web
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

So now I have the dilemma of what to do with two versions? The original, darker version is actually quite striking -- and has been one of my best sellers, despite the fact that Great Sand Dunes, only gets about 275,000 visitors each year.

So, let's put it to a vote and see what we all think collectively!

Yosemite Firefall

Did you know the Yosemite Firefall was a summer time event that began in 1872 and continued for almost a century? Burning hot embers were pushed over the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park to the valley floor 3,000 feet below. From a distance it appeared as a burning waterfall. The Firefall was orchestrated by the Glacier Point Hotel owners. Each night, as a signal to start pushing the embers over, David Curry, founder of Curry Village, would yell across the valley: “Let the fire fall.”

The National Park Service ordered the Firefall to stop in January 1968. The NPS was trying to preserve the Valley, and protect it from the overwhelming number of visitors who trampled meadows in order to see something that was not a natural event was. Ironically, the Glacier Point Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1969 and was never rebuilt.

About the Image Creation Process

About the Image Creation Process
I have developed a “photo-graphic” process to create these iconic images. It all starts out in the field when I take a series of photographs – from seriously under exposed to seriously over exposed – nine shots in all.

Back in the digital darkroom, I select three or more of these images and employ High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography techniques to create an exposure that is typically not possible by taking a single shot. Using HDR is needed when there is a high dynamic range of light – a sunset, brightly lit scenes on snow or water, or intensely backlit situations. By using up to nine shots in my HDR photography, I can capture an amazing range of light! Perfect for National Park scenes.
Once the digital negative is produced, it’s time to move it to Photoshop, where it undergoes the transformation using a variety of filters, layers, techniques and tweaks to create the final graphic image. Finally, based on my research of the park's most popular features, the headline and subtext are overlaid on the image. And finally, the name of the National Park, along with a customized icon featuring the year the park was designated, is added to the artwork.
After the master artwork is produced, the final images for the posters, calendar, note cards and postcards will be created and made ready for printing.

Kickstarter Introduction

Here's the Kickstarter Introduction Video!

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

American Icons: Our National Parks Launched on Kickstarter

Join me on a journey to create iconic images for all 59 National Parks in a style reminiscent of the WPA from the 1930s & 1940s.
My name is Rob Decker and I'm a photographer, graphic designer and independent producer. I have two great passions – Photography & our National Parks. From the age of six, I have been visiting and photographing the National Parks, and have visited 23…so far.
In 1979, I studied photography with Ansel Adams in Yosemite National Park, an amazing experience that has left a lasting impression. Today, I live in Colorado, practically in the shadow of Rocky Mountain National Park.
American Icons: Our National Parks, is a photo-graphic project aimed at creating individual iconic images for each of America’s 59 National Parks. The project is inspired by the posters created during the Works Program Administration (WPA) where hundreds of artists were commissioned to create thousands of posters to stir the public’s imagination for education, theater, health, safety and travel.
But only 14 National Park posters were created…and there were only 25 National Parks at that time.
My goal is to create unique, iconic images for each of the 59 National Parks, which as a photographer is a real challenge – to create that single photograph to truly represents each park.
The basis of this Kickstarter project is to get the first 12 iconic images done...and since there are 18 national parks within 10 hours' drive...I expect to easily create the remaining nine images by the end of this year.
And, by backing this project, you can make a positive impact on the future of our National Parks!
Many – if not most – of our National Parks are under duress. Yosemite on fire! Yellowstone lost more than 790,000 acres in 1988. The ice is melting at both Glacier Bay and Glacier National Parks! Acid rain is damaging Rocky Mountain National Park! And 65 million visitors each year strain resources at all levels – roads, trails, campgrounds, services and much more.
Your Support Can Help Our National Parks!
One of the most important aspects of this project is to eventually get these posters, postcards, note cards and calendars into the bookstores at the National Parks and nature associations that support them. Proceeds directly and positively impact the National Park Service by generating revenues that can be used to preserve the parks, educate visitors, build and maintain trails and allow for the enjoyment of the parks by future generations.
With your help, I’ll be able to finish photographing each of the parks and create iconic images in the timeless style of the WPA era. With 59 parks, this is a monumental effort and my goal is to complete this project to coincide with the upcoming 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016.
What I Need & What's In It For You!
I am seeking $27,000 in funding to truly kick start this project. The short-term goal is to complete 12 images by early December, 2013 – so you won’t have to wait 2 years for your rewards! There will be a series of 12 postcards, 12 note cards, a 12-month 2014 calendar and 12 unique 13” x 19” posters -- all printed and shipped before the holidays. These will make great gifts for anyone on your list!
I have already created 3 images, so the funds will go towards creating the remaining 9 images in the first collection of 12. I’ll also be creating some polls and surveys so that you can get involved and have input on which parks you’d most like to see covered!
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition, so if I don’t reach my funding goal, you won’t be charged and the project may not get off the ground. Kickstarter fees are about 10%, and the cost of paper, printing, mailing envelopes -- as well as postage for mailing your rewards -- will account for a significant amount of the overall funding.
Beyond that, I hope to raise enough funds to complete the entire set of 59 parks – and who knows – by 2016, there could even be some new ones! For the parks I can’t get to in person, I will be acquiring photographs from other photographers and deriving the final graphic images from those photos.
  • My first image, for Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, is currently being reviewed by their staff for inclusion in bookstore and on line sales!
  • I’m actively developing the image for Arches National Park, and will be working with the Canyonlands Natural History Association once this project is off the ground.
  • And, I’ve been in touch with the Rocky Mountain Nature Association and have started working on an image for Rocky Mountain National Park.
About the Image Creation Process
I have developed a “photo-graphic” process to create these iconic images. It all starts out in the field when I take a series of photographs – from seriously under exposed to seriously over exposed – nine shots in all.
