Press Checks & Print Runs: The Movie

Here’s a little video I put together from the day at the printers! We got off to a rough start — the press was generating errors — but once the problem was fixed, it was smooth sailing!

Special National Park Poster Project Upgrades

With just hours left on the Kickstarter campaign, I wanted to give you some last minute updates!

We managed to exceed all of our funding goals…and we’re just about to top 350 Backers 450% of our original goal! The best news is that by crashing the $20K funding mark, I’m able to offer backers so much more…

First off, every backer at the $10 and up level will now receive the Typography Poster absolutely free in addition to the posters they pledged.

So, you can actually pledge $10 and get they Typography Poster and a National Park poster — it’s the same as the $25 pledge — but since we reached our funding goals, I’m able to spread the love!

Second, everyone will get digital wallpaper backgrounds for phones, tablets, laptops and desktops featuring the images from The National Park Poster Project.

Third, everyone will receive a digital download of the Typography Poster…to do with what you will!

And, finally, we’re going to be able to up the print quality of the posters, using an environmentally-responsible, 100% recycled paper stock called “Conservation,” soy and veggie-based inks by working with D&K Printing in Boulder, Colorado.

There’s still time to get involved — but not much — the campaign ends tonight at 10PM Mountain Time.

Here’s the link one more time! goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks,

Rob.

P.S. Still working on the last poster — for Rocky Mountain National Park!

The National Park Poster Project Enters Final Campaign Days

Well, the Kickstarter campaign has been a raging success, to say the least!

We were awarded Kickstarter Staff Pick status in the first week…and we hit the 100% funding mark in just nine days.

Then, we were off to the races. We hit 200%, then 200 backers. Then, 300% and 300 backers. Now, we’re on the verge of hitting 400% of our original funding goal.

During the campaign, we’ve released posters for Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Grand Teton. I’m putting the finishing touches on Haleakala, and a second poster for Rocky Mountain this weekend (and I promise to have them done before the campaign ends on Sunday!).

And, the Grand Teton poster capped off the Rocky Mountain Collection…

So, just wanted to say “Thank You” again for all the incredible support, words of encouragement, and sharing this project with friends, family, followers and others who love the national parks!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Poster

It’s been said that the Black Canyon gets its name because it’s so steep, it only gets 33 minutes of sunlight every day. The canyon is actually alive with vibrant colors of rock, water and sky.

This is the 10th poster to be completed. Just two more to go!

Mesa Verde National Park Poster Released Today!

I’ve just finished the Mesa Verde National Park Poster, which turned out to be a real challenge…as the cliff dwellings required more detail than most scenes.

The new Mesa Verde poster is part of The National Park Poster Project — a Kickstarter campaign you can see here: http://goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks to awesome backer support, in just three weeks, our Kickstarter Staff Pick project has more than 150 backers and raised nearly 200% of our original funding goal!

Remember, once we reach 200% of our original funding goal, all backers will get a set of digital wallpapers for desktops, tablets and phones — featuring images from The National Park Poster Project.

So, with about a week to go, I’m hoping we can reach one more goal — to get 200 backers!

If you could become a backer of The National Park Poster Project on Kickstarter, you can get awesome posters, that are perfect for holiday giving! Click here to check it out: http://goo.gl/DFKPG0

Thanks! And, please share The National Park Poster Project with your friends, family, or anyone you think might be interested.

Also, I’ve created an Exclusive Backer Survey, where you can help decide which National Parks will be included in the next series of poster designs.

If you can back The National Park Poster Project — even at the $1 level — I’ll send you a link to the survey so you can help guide the future of The National Park Poster Project!

Rocky Mountain National Park Sneak Peek!

Last week was awesome, with great media coverage, Kickstarter Staff Pick status, and we reached our minimum funding goal in just nine days!

Check out the Kickstarter Page: goo.gl/DFKPG0

Today, I am releasing one of the two Rocky Mountain National Park posters…this one of Cub Lake. I’ve got a couple of other Rocky Mountain posters in the works…and I may put out a survey to see which ones people like best.

So, here’s Rocky Mountain #1…featuring Cub Lake…an easy hike out of Moraine Park, it offers meadows — often populated with wildflowers and wildlife — marsh, forests of pine and aspen and a serene lake surrounded by mountains. With a modest elevation gain, at least by Rocky Mountain National Park standards, this is a great hike for families whose skills have progressed beyond shorter hikes.

The National Park Poster Project Hits Funding Goal...In Just Nine Days!

The National Park Poster Project, currently running on Kickstarter, has reached it’s initial funding goal…in just nine days. The project, which was touted as one of Kickstarter’s fastest growing projects, and then awarded the Kickstarter Staff Pick no doubt added to the campaign’s success.

But now, there is much more to do! In order to reach the ultimate goal of creating a poster for each of the 59 National Parks, additional funds are needed for acquiring images, creating the artwork and printing the final posters.

Here’s a sneak peak at the Grand Teton National Park poster.

So, there’s more than two week’s left in the campaign, so please continue to share…and if you can back this project, that would be great, too!

National Park Poster Project Garners Mainstream Media Coverage

The National Park Poster Project was featured in an article published by Natural Habitat Adventures on the official travel blog of the World Wildlife Fund! The article was written by Candice Andrews, an award-winning author and writer specializing in nature-travel topics and environmental issues, Candice has traveled around the world, from the Arctic Circle to Antarctica, and from New Zealand to Scotland’s far northern, remote regions. Her assignments have been equally diverse, from covering Alaska’s Yukon Quest dogsled race to the national snow-sculpting competition in her home state of Wisconsin.

Great Sand Dunes National Park WPA-Style Poster

The Tale of Two Sand Dunes

I first visited Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in 2010, but when I started this project in 2013, and looked through those shots, I hadn't really captured that single iconic shot I was looking for. One day, while on the Great Sand Dunes NPS site, there was an image in the gallery that was exactly what I had in mind!

To my surprise, there was a link to get more information about a high resolution version of the file.

When I called the visitor center, not only did I find someone to talk to about it, I was talking to Patrick Myers, the National Park Ranger who took the photo! I told him about my project, and he offered to put the large digital file onto a CD and mail it to me. So, although I really wanted to use my own photography in the posters, who better than someone who literally lives and breathes Great Sand Dunes every single day!

Armed with the digital content, as well as Patrick Myers consent, I started work on the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve poster. The photograph featured the sand dunes in the foreground and the Sangre de Christo mountain range in the back. The shot was taken late in the afternoon, so that the dunes cast long shadows.

After completing the photo-graphic process, I added the other graphic elements -- headlines, text, logos, etc. And the poster was ready to go.

In July of 2014, I visited Great Sand Dunes again, and although I had my cameras, I was there to show Patrick Myers, as well as bookstore staff, the poster I had created. Of course, Murphy's Law came into play, as my large format printer died the day before...and I wasn't able to get a good print to show them, and had to resort to an on-screen version on my laptop.

Well the good news was that they loved it! But they did have a couple of suggestions. The first was to add in the foreground, Medano Creek, which has a seasonal flow, mostly from the spring runoff. The second suggestion was to make the dunes themselves a little more orange color. That was actually the easy part.

Again, I went back to the well (no pun intended), and looked at my earlier Sand Dunes photos to see if I had any shots featuring the water in Medano Creek. And I hit the jackpot. I had a great shot of the water with the sand dunes in the background in a pretty similar perspective. Decades of work in Photoshop prepared me for the next step, where I had to integrate the water into the existing photo...which did not have any to begin with. I also needed to get the water to mimic the same time of day as the original photo...and ultimately ended up brightening the whole scene...allowing for a little more daylight to light up the dunes and reflect off the water.

I had a very short run of the new poster printed up at Colt Printing in Boulder, and when they were done, mailed off a couple of copies for the staff at Great Sand Dunes to enjoy. When they arrived, Patrick Myers sent me an email:

Rob,

We got them, and they look perfect!  You have nailed it.

Thanks again!

So now I have the dilemma of what to do with two versions? The original, darker version is actually quite striking -- and has been one of my best sellers, despite the fact that Great Sand Dunes, only gets about 275,000 visitors each year.

So, let's put it to a vote and see what we all think collectively!

Yosemite Firefall

Did you know the Yosemite Firefall was a summer time event that began in 1872 and continued for almost a century? Burning hot embers were pushed over the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park to the valley floor 3,000 feet below. From a distance it appeared as a burning waterfall. The Firefall was orchestrated by the Glacier Point Hotel owners. Each night, as a signal to start pushing the embers over, David Curry, founder of Curry Village, would yell across the valley: “Let the fire fall.”

The National Park Service ordered the Firefall to stop in January 1968. The NPS was trying to preserve the Valley, and protect it from the overwhelming number of visitors who trampled meadows in order to see something that was not a natural event was. Ironically, the Glacier Point Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1969 and was never rebuilt.

Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde is a spectacular place and Cliff Palace is a remarkable site that’s well worth the visit.

I am working on series of WPA-style posters and will be including a poster for Mesa Verde in the next release. It will be part of the Colorado Collection, which also includes Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon of the Gunisson, and Rocky Mountain National Parks.
